Tres Premios Polar en la edición 2023

Aunque no es lo habitual, había ocurrido ya anteriormente (en 2001 y 2019). Otra vez se han concedido tres Premios Polar en la presente edición 2023, cada uno de ellos dotado con el tradicional millón de coronas suecas (que este año equivale a 88.500€ aproximadamente) que tan atractivo hace a este premio, y que provoca la inmediata comparación con el 'Premio Nobel de la Música'. 

El premio de 'música clásica' -aunque no se le denomine así- ha recaído en el compositor estonio Arvo Pärt (Paide, 11.09.1935), de quien el jurado destaca su "música valientemente bella que crea profundidad en todos los sentidos". Esta es la nota que ofrece la página oficial del Premio Polar: 

The Polar Music Prize 2023 is awarded to Arvo Pärt from Estonia. Composer Arvo Pärt has likened his music to white light. It is in the encounter with the prism of the listener’s soul that all colors become visible. Anyone who has heard his laconic, reduced compositions will understand this perfectly. Influenced by sacred music, especially Gregorian chant, Arvo Pärt has created the compositional style tintinnabuli, from the Latin word for 'bell', in which the music moves according to a given structure. In 2006 and 2007, Arvo Pärt dedicated the performances of his works to the murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and other dissidents in Russia. Arvo Pärt's courageously beautiful music creates depth in every sense.

Otro de los premios, el tradicionalmente considerado 'de música moderna' ha recaído en la compositora y cantante beninesa Angélique Kidjo (Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo; Ouidah, 14.07.1960), de quien se resalta su capacidad de reunir la música de Benin con el soul, el jazz, el reggae, el afrobeat, la música pop y la música clásica occidental. La nota de la página oficial del Premio Polar dice:

The Polar Music Prize 2023 is awarded to Angélique Kidjo from Benin. A unique and unstoppable artist and songwriter. Angélique Kidjo speaks and sings in five languages: Fon, French, Yorùbá, Goun and English. Angélique grew up in Cotonou, surrounded by the dynamic Beninese culture and listening to music from all over the world: soul, jazz, reggae, afrobeat, pop, classical. When a communist dictatorship tried to silence her, she moved to Paris and became even more active. Angélique Kidjo invented the word batonga, a response to those who think girls don't belong in schools, and runs the Batonga Foundation, which seeks out girls and provides them with education. Bono has said of her, "In Africa's new morning, Angélique Kidjo is the warmth of the rising sun."

El tercer premiado es Chris Blackwell (Londres; 22.06.1937), el fundador de Island Records, un sello discográfico mítico en los primeros tiempos del reggae y del ska que grabó todo tipo de artistas a lo largo de sus treinta años de existencia, entre 1959 y 1989. Blackwell fundó también Mango Records y fue un destacado productor musical que apoyó y dió a conocer numerosos artistas y grupos. En su nota oficial, el Premio Polar destaca que: 

The Polar Music Prize 2023 is awarded to Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. As a record producer and genuine music lover, Chris Blackwell has been one of the key figures in the development of popular music for half a century. When Island Records was founded in Jamaica in 1959, he began his mission to introduce the world to ska and reggae. In folk, rock and disco, he has invested in uncompromising artists and helped them become the best version of themselves. Never focusing on sales figures, but on the songs and albums as works of art. Chris Blackwell has expanded the world and abolished border controls between genres.

El Polar Music Prize fue fundado en 1989 por Stig ”Stikkan” Anderson, el mítico manager de ABBA, que precisamente llamó así al premio por el nombre de su sello discográfico, Polar Music. Desde entonces cada año premia a uno o normalmente dos artistas de primera categoría, entre los que figuran las principales figuras de la música de los últimos cincuenta años.
