Staging Berg’s Lulu is a multiple challenge. It is a challenge for the stage director, who has to find way of effectively representing this lengthy work. It is a challenge for the singers, and in particular for the protagonist, who has to face a terribly difficult vocal line. It is a challenge for the opera house, which has to convince its audience of the cultural value of the choice of Berg’s opera (and normally, opera goers are not particularly willing to embrace unconventional works). In deciding to propose Lulu, then, the Lyric Opera of Chicago took quite a bold step indeed, a wager which resulted finally in a huge success.Nothing in this production could have worked better than it did.
