It’s taken nine years for Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de loin to finally receive its UK premiere although a concert performance of the work was given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2002. Since its first performance at the Salzburg Festival in 2000, Saariaho’s first opera has been widely praised and this visually ravishing production will no doubt win it additional converts.The story is slim. Jaufre, a Prince and medieval troubadour, tires of his life of empty pleasures and yearns for a distant lover, who he believes does not exist. A travelling pilgrim , who has arrived from overseas, informs him that such a woman (Clemence) does exist and that he has met her. From then on the pilgrim acts as a go-between the two. Jaufre eventually travels to meet her but falls ill on the journey and dies after the two have briefly met and declared their…
