The San Francisco Opera scored an impressive success with the production of Verdi’s Il trovatore that opened the company’s new season. Not only did it serve David McVicar’s successful production with a remarkable quartet of singers and a very fine conductor, but it also allowed 25,000 spectators outside the theater to follow one of the performances for free on giant screens mounted at the huge baseball field of the San Francisco Giants. The initiative was intended to introduce a wider audience to opera and, consequently, to form a new generation of opera regulars. The screening of Il trovatore proved to be an ideal choice both for the dramatically powerful qualities of Verdi’s work and for the outstanding performance proposed by the SFO.David McVicar’s production was conceived for the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2006.
