The curtain raised on the 2009-10 season of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and many spectators gasped with amazement at the view of Renzo Mongiardino’s baroque setting wherein the first act of Puccini’s Tosca takes place. The monumental reproduction of the interior of the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome sets the tone for the whole production of the opera, originally conceived by the eighty-six year old Italian director Franco Zeffirelli and revived in Chicago by Garnett Bruce. Taking as a starting point the pervasive presence of the ‘sound’ of Rome in the score, Zeffirelli conceived its visual counterpart by emphasizing the luxury of the architectural spaces in which the opera is set.
