Staging Il Trittico is a difficult proposition for any opera house. Although united by themes of bereavement and its legacy of emotional, physical and financial entrapment, the operas themselves range widely, offering a kaleidoscope of musical styles which can be tricky to present as a coherent evening’s entertainment. Other challenges are more prosaic: with a preponderance of small roles, casting these three one-act operas satisfactorily can be taxing without using the budget of three larger productions. On CD, Angela Gheorghiu might be perfect as Lauretta, but who can afford the luxury in the theatre?
