Among lovers of French Baroque music the name Reinhard Goebel is well-known, not only since he provided the music for Le roi danse. Even though being a professed specialist in French Baroque music, Goebel does not care much for modern ‘historic performance practice’ (as promoted by Christie, Minkowski and others). Consquently, Goebel is not a big fan of all these artificially over-dotted rhythms – he still plays in the same style akin to that of the 1950s. Critics could say that by doing so the typical affectionate French character of the music gets lost. Nevertheless Goebel manages to create a rather interesting and unconventional interpretation (Still a piece like the Ouverture pour l’église H. 524 would certainly sound much more captivating in the ‘modern historical’ interpretation ...).On this new CD of sacred music by Charpentier,…
