At 69 Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo has managed to grab the opera world’s attention by making his debut as Simon Boccanegra at some of the most important theatres in the world. His first time singing as a baritone for very many years, Domingo’s Simon has become the most discussed opera gig of the 2009-10 season. The wait for it was somewhat nerve-wracking. In the Spring, Domingo cancelled his Tamerlano at the Royal Opera House as a result of an operation that was then announced as of colonic cancer. Very few thought Domingo would be back on time to sing Simon at La Scala and London, but the global superstar, larger than life, returned to the stages to be acclaimed, once again, as one of the most phenomenal figures of the opera world since the invention of recordings.
