As starry casts go, the one assembled by the Royal Opera for their new production of Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (signed by David McVicar) is difficult to match: Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann, Olga Borodina and Alessandro Corbelli with Mark Elder conducting. The sheer brilliance of this list begs two questions. One the one hand, does Cilea’s rather dull opera deserve such a display of operatic stardust? No sir – one doesn’t need to waste the talent of the above with this bad libretto and not much better music which has been justly confined to the list of famous-thanks-to-a-couple-of-really-good-moments-yet-hardly-ever-performed operas. On the other, would one be able to put up with Adriana were it not precisely for all the stardust? Absolutely not – the idea of an Adriana evening with, say, Micaela Carosi, José Cura,…
