David McVicar’s 2010 S&M fantasy-cum-opera production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida returned to the Royal Opera and brought along with it some excitement. On the auspicious side was the starry presence of Roberto Alagna and Olga Borodina. The former is an increasingly respected Radames, in spite of his having been booed at La Scala, and the latter is one of the most reputed Amneris´ in the world. Alas, I missed the former and didn’t quite think the latter stole the show. On the inauspicious side, Micaela Carosi was reportedly booed in the dress rehearsal and pulled out of the run. For those who are not familiar with the Royal Opera, it must be explained that the London audience never boos any singer (directors are rarely booed) regardless of their quality.
