For over a decade, Musikfest has been the musical highlight of September in Berlin. The festival, which features performances from the major Berlin orchestras and internationally renowned guests over the span of three weeks, traditionally offers a series of inventive programmes structured around a central theme. This year, the 450th birthday of Monteverdi – which will be marked by performances of his three surviving operas – along with the festival’s usual devotion to new(er) composers has provided a readymade framework for an investigation into the relationship of past and present.

Regardless of the year’s presiding theme, Musikfest is also frequently a reliable source of great Bruckner performances. Bruckner is, of course, never too far from the centre of the Austro-German standard repertoire, but there are few living conductors for…
