Berlin probably didn’t need another concert hall … but with the reopening of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, that’s precisely what it got. With the floor of the orchestra pit raised, a backdrop of pilasters and gilded corinthian capitals lowered to conceal the backstage, and two elaborate chandeliers hanging from above, the opera house did a remarkably good impression of an intimate orchestral venue. On the previous evening the newly-revived Staatsoper had been inaugurated with Jürgen Flimm’s production of Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s Faust, and for the second night of the opening ceremonies it hosted the Staatskapelle Berlin’s first subscription concert of the season. Once again Daniel Barenboim conducted, and there was Schumann on the programme.
