Several years ago it was announced that visual artist Jonathan Meese had been hired to direct the 2016 Parsifal at Bayreuth. By 2014, Mr Meese had been removed from the project on the grounds that his production was threatening to go considerably over-budget, although Mr Meese’s occasional use of highly contentious imagery – he was taken to court over the use of a Nazi salute during a performance piece in 2013 – probably had the Bayreuth management far more on edge. In the end, the 2016 Parsifal was directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg, whose production was met with lukewarm reviews and deemed tame enough for a DVD release on Deutsche Grammophon.

Mr Meese’s own Parsifal concept was evidently at an advanced stage when Bayreuth pulled the plug on it. But he didn’t let his work go to waste. In collaboration with composer Bernhard Lang and…
